Beyond the Business Bookshelf

Bookshelf with books

If I were to recommend my favorite business, technology, writing or design books my list would most likely look like any number of lists you can see on LinkedIn and elsewhere. There are thousands of books on these topics with new ones or new editions of perennial favorites coming out weekly. So, instead I’m going to use this space to discuss how non-business-related books I’ve read inspire my thinking on these subjects.

For example, what can Around the World in 80 Trees, by Jonathan Drori and Lucille Clerc, tell us about competition. How can The Amusement Park: 900 Years of Thrills and Spills, and the Dreamers and Schemers Who Built Them, by Stephen M. Silverman, help us think about how to see things in a new way? What does Fred Harvey’s life, as discussed in Appetite for America: Fred Harvey and the Business of Civilizing the Wild West—One Meal at a Time, offer us as a glimpse for reinventing ourselves and our businesses.
